چکیده

Existing software proposals for electronic payments can be divided into “on-line” schemes that require participation of a trusted party (the bank) in every transaction and are secure against overspending, and the “off-line” schemes that do not require a third party and guarantee only that overspending is detected when vendors submit their transaction records to the bank (usually at the end of the day). We propose a new hybrid scheme that combines the advantages of both of the above traditional design strategies. It allows for control of overspending at a cost of only a modest increase in communication compared to the off-line schemes. Our protocol is based on probabilistic polling. During each transaction, with some small probability, the vendor forwards information about this transaction to the bank. This enables the bank to maintain an accurate approximation of a customer’s spending. The frequency of polling messages is related to the monetary value of transactions and the amount of overspending the bank is willing to risk. The probabilistic polling model creates a natural spectrum bridging the existing online and off-line electronic commerce models. For transactions of high monetary value, the cost of polling approaches that of the on-line schemes, but for micropayments, the cost of polling is a small increase over the traffic incurred by the off-line schemes.

Micropayment Scheme with Distributed Probabilistic Auditing

Micropayment systems are electronic payment systems that are used for very small payment and for their viability must have small transaction cost. In this paper we propose a coin-based micropayment scheme that uses a probabilistic fraud checking with distributed verification to provide an efficient solution to detect double spending by malicious customers and hence reduces the risk on the merch...

Improved Probabilistic Micropayment Scheme

Micropayment schemes are recently considered to have a variety of practical applications. Such kind of schemes handle a sequence of very small payments which therefore should be quite efficient to be payed and verified. An electronic lottery ticket scheme was proposed by Rivest as a means of probabilistic micropayment scheme in order to reduce the administrative cost of the bank. In this paper,...

Decentralized Anonymous Micropayments

Micropayments (payments worth a few pennies) have numerous potential applications. A challenge in achieving them is that payment networks charge fees that are high compared to “micro” sums of money. Wheeler (1996) and Rivest (1997) proposed probabilistic payments as a technique to achieve micropayments: a merchant receives a macro-value payment with a given probability so that, in expectation, ...

Improvements in Probabilistic Micropayment Schemes

This paper reviews the desirable properties and security features of electronic commerce systems and the problems that are unique to electronic cash. We will then examine two older micropayment systems, describing the desirable properties that they achieve. Finally, we will present a new micropayment system for electronic commerce introduced by Silvio Micali and Ronald Rivest, including the dig...

Micropayments Revisited

We present new micropayment schemes that are more efficient and user friendly than previous ones. These schemes reduce bank processing costs by several orders of magnitude, while preserving a simple interface for both users and merchants. The schemes utilize a probabilistic deposit protocol that, in some of the schemes, may be entirely hidden from the users.
